Dr. Niesenbaum Certified for Stem Cell Therapy
Dr. Niesenbaum has recently become certified by Vet-Stem, a California based company that is on the cutting edge of stem cell therapy to treat dogs for arthritis and certain soft tissue injuries.
There are three steps to the procedure. First, an accurate diagonsis must be obtained via physical examination, medical history, and radiographs of the joints. Once we have a diagnosis, we can determine if a patient is an appropriate candidate for regnerative stem cell therapy.
Second, under general anesthesia, adipose (fat) tissue is harvested and sent to Vet Stem for processing. They will extract the stem cells and send them back to us.
Finally, under sedation, the cells are injected back into the patient, in most cases within 48 hours of harvesting. The number of treatments varies, but usually only one set of injections is needed. Extra stem cells, if available are saved at Vet Stem's laboratory and cryogenically stored, for future use if needed.
