Welcome to Our Site

At Crawford Dog and Cat Hospital, we treat a wide range of cancers in our pet patients.  Some tumors are treated by surgery, some are referred to area specialty centers for radiation therapy, and others are treated with chemotherapy.  We emphasize quality of life for our patients when we are choosing a therapeutic plan, hoping that we can keep the family intact and the pet comfortable for as long as possible.  We have had many cases of animals staying in remission for years after treatment at our hospital.

While we have had some very good success with chemotherapy for canine lymphosarcoma as well as a variety of feline lymphoma patients, we have been frustrated with the lack of options for some of our recurrent or aggressive canine mast cell tumors.  Canine mast cell carcinomas are the most common malignant skin cancer that we see in dogs in our area.  Less aggressive tumors are managed with surgery and sometimes chemotherapy and do quite well.  But for those dogs where the tumor comes back we have had poorer results.

This is why we are happy to hear the Pfizer Animal Health has received FDA approval for Palladia, actually the first chemotherapy drug approved solely for veterinary use.  This oral medication will be available to general practitioners early in 2010 for the treatment of of canine mast cell tumors.  It has been shown to be effective in treating grade ii and grade iii mast cell tumors with or without regional lymph node involvement in dogs.

I know that you will be hearing more about Palladia in the news and wanted to give my patients a heads up.  Pfizer has made the full prescribing information available on the web at www.palladia-pi.com.

An important element of our mission is to help pets live longer, healthier lives.  The approval of Palladia marks an important step forward for the veterinary profession and we hope that we can work with our clients to improve the quality of life for our patients fighting cancer.
